How these numbers are built. Each job starts from a national baseline parts price and book labor hours, then gets adjusted for your make's parts pricing, body size, engine configuration, labor-rate region, shop type and parts source. Labor = book hours × your rate × an access-difficulty factor for the brand. The low–high range reflects normal shop-to-shop spread. Likelihood comes from a Weibull wear model centred on each component's typical service life, scaled by how many vehicles ever need that repair at all, then adjusted by the brand's repair-frequency record and the condition you selected.

About the VIN decoder. Characters 4–8 of a VIN carry the model, engine and body, but each manufacturer assigns that block privately — there is no public formula. So the decoder does what it can locally (check digit, model year from character 10, manufacturer from the first three) and asks NHTSA's free public vPIC database for the rest. With a connection you get model, engine, transmission and drivetrain filled in automatically; without one you still get year and make, and you pick the model. Nothing about your VIN is stored or sent anywhere except that NHTSA lookup.

How the warranty evaluator works. It reads the number of open NHTSA recall campaigns on record for that exact year, make and model and grades the result, with a set of brands whose repair costs are high enough that coverage is advised regardless of recall history. Recall counts come from the same NHTSA dataset behind the rest of The Lemon Report. Coverage terms vary enormously between the 278+ administrators in this market, so treat the verdict as a starting position and price the specific plan on its own merits.
